How is does the test performed?
A prerequisite for examining the fundus is the dilated pupil (mydriasis). The embodiment of pupillary dilation allows, essentially, the ophthalomologist to view the interior of the eye and this is achieved by the use of topical eye drops. For a good mydriasis, usually 10-15 minutes are required. The ophthalmologist then has the possibility of using a slit lamp, special lenses or an ophthalmoscope to observe the fundus and examine, in detail, the region of the macula, the blood vessels in the retina, the optic nerve etc.

This examination is, in no way, characterized as painful, just in some cases, the light used can be considered a little annoying by the patient. The whole process takes no more than 3 minutes.

Useful instructions for fundoscopy:
Because of the necessary mydriasis of the pupil, the vision (especially the close one) of the patient will remain blurred for about 1.5 – 2 hours, but it gradually returns. Generally, it is advisable to avoid driving by people with mydriasis for this length of time (until the restoration of vision). Also, help for the patient, is a pair of sunglasses, as in the state of pupil mydriasis increased photosensitivity-photophobia is observed.

Finally it is worth mentioning that an examination of the fundus can be performed safely during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
